Holy 75th Anniversary, Batman!

2014 marked a banner year for graphic novels.  Superheroes and anime being all the rage, and Comic Con wrapping up its 45th Anniversary, it’s not surprising that Batman turns 75 years old this year!

The first story published in 1939, originally written for pulp genre, established  Batman as a counterpart to Superman.  With his famous bat shaped caped was inspired by a sketch from Leonardo da Vinici, parts of his character can be traced to Zorro and The Scarlet Pimpernel, while other parts shadow pulp characters like The Shadow, Dick Tracy and Sherlock Holmes.

Robin, Catwoman, the Joker, Killer Croc and Harley Quinn added to his dark and mysterious adventures. Over the years Batman’s universe expanded, from alternate versions of the "Caped Crusader", to a jump from print to television and movies, and beyond.  Batman continues to make his mark in and outside of the comic book universe.

Comic Con hosted an all-star panel of the people who were instrumental in creating and developing this legendary hero. You can read about the event here. (A tribute short video dedicated to Batman's 75th Anniversary was made by producer Bruce Timm - check it out!)
